"Weep for You", likewise known every bit "Cry for Y'all (You'll Never See Me Over again)" on Hard2Beat,[1] is a vocal by Swedish singer Petra Marklund, performing as September. The trip the light fantastic toe-pop track spent 3 weeks at the top spot of Billboard's Hot Dance Airplay Chart in May 2007.[two] In the United States, it is the second single from September's album September, succeeding "Satellites" (a number 8 hit on the Dance Airplay chart), while overseas information technology is her fifth single release from her 2nd studio anthology In Orbit, following "Information technology Doesn't Matter". It is likewise a single from various compilation albums released in Europe.

The single was a huge success in Sweden equally well every bit the rest of Europe, and can be considered her biggest hit notwithstanding, together with "Satellites". In her homeland of Sweden, "Cry for You" peaked at the number 6 position on the Swedish Top 60 Singles Chart for two weeks in a row. It remained on the singles nautical chart in Sweden for 17 non-consecutive weeks.

As of November 2010, "Cry for You" has been certified Gold in the United States for sales of over 500,000 copies, making September the first Swedish vocaliser to receive a Gilded certification in the Us since Ace of Base's 1998 hit "Cruel Summer".

In late 2018, nearly 12 years after its release, the song was turned into a meme on Twitter, thanks to its "y'all'll never see me again" lyrics.[3]

Composition and release [edit]

Before the worldwide release in 2007, September had originally recorded the song for her studio album In Orbit (2005). Even so, in many compilations September has released, the song has appeared on her compilations including September, Dancing in Orbit, Gold and Weep for Y'all - The Album. According to September, she explained the reason why she wanted to release it worldwide, by saying "The song was so potent by itself. And I've been there and it feels like the fans are starved of dance music. Only now dance music is coming dorsum once more, and the earth is getting smaller and smaller because of the cyberspace – that now sometimes y'all don't even accept to exercise much promotion, although manifestly it is still very important. But I think that a hit song will ever detect a way."[4]

In an interview with Digital Spy, they asked about the background of the song, when she replied:[four]

"It's about when you're done with relationship. A lot of people write to me and say 'Information technology'due south actually emotional and I feel so much for the song considering my young man la la la', which is really prissy for me, even though I didn't write the lyrics. I've had a lot of experiences like that so that'due south what gives me the nervus to sing information technology."

The song features a trip the light fantastic toe-pop,[5] Europop[6] [seven] and house[8] sound and has been compared to Bronski Beat's "Smalltown Boy" and its sampled counterpart, "Tell Me Why" by Supermode, although possible similarities take been alleged unintended.[9]

Critical reception [edit]

"Weep for You" received positive reviews from music critics. Nick Levine from Digital Spy awarded the song with four stars out of five, giving it a positive review. He stated "[...] information technology's a surprisingly affecting Eurodance number, a record that's both relentlessly danceable and desperately sad" and said its "actually a pretty decent record."[10] However, he felt the song was non "original" plenty to outbet releases by fellow Swedish singer Robyn. Popjustice said the song is a "massive balls-out gild anthem and nosotros call up it works rather well."[eleven] Ben Norman from Almost.com called the song the "All-time Dance Crossover Rail", while maxim "Robbins [Entertainment] has since made peace with me by backing and promoting Swedish vocaliser September and this Europop confection. Skilful job guys!."[12]

AllMusic had rated the song three-and-a-half-stars out of five stars.[13] Chiliad. Ross Hoffman, also from AllMusic, had highlighted the vocal as an album standout, and said "'Cry [for You]' is the obvious standout, managing to conjure both sophistication and a surprising degree of emotion from its adequately pedestrian frothy electro-pop arrangement and polished only powerful song plow."[14] Still, he also added "'Cry for You' is a stiff plenty track (though fairly faceless too, in its way) [...]." PopBytes.com gave it a positive review, saying information technology'south "total pop dance fluff but highly enjoyable."[15]
